Immediately following the 2010 earthquake, the Haitian population encountered a cholera outbreak that quickly reached epidemic proportions. The United Nations estimated that up to 650,000 individuals could be affected. Unsanitary conditions and limited access to rural medical facilities have been attributed to an alarming number of preventable deaths. Due to damaged infrastructure, many individuals infected with cholera are physically unable to reach medical clinics prior to life-threatening dehydration. This series of images shows patients undergoing treatment for cholera exposure in Port-au-Prince and surrounding regions.
